Table lamps for every occasion

I never underestimate the attraction and importance of table lamps when I am designing a space. Just like some of the best people in your life, they have distinct personalities. Serious, quirky, upbeat, moody, colourful just to name a few and they most definitely set the tone of a space.

Task lighting is kind to the complexion, so if you have a client winding their way to a more mature stage of life, a table lamp or three will never be questioned.

Children’s rooms do not seem to work as well without a sweet, themed lamp, which can aid in a better night’s sleep for everyone, so how could they not be a winner.

Sometimes when I am stuck on the direction of a design I will start with the table lamp. Yes, I can end up down a deep, deep Google hole trying to find just that perfect shape, colour and size but once you do every other decision can be just that little easier.

A few things to keep in mind when searching for table or desk lamps. Where possible, order from a reputable company. Even when they arrive wrapped up like a newborn, breakages are part of life so you need to know you will be looked after in a timely fashion.

How do you get the lamp shade to be just the right proportion for a side table? Generally, the shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base, and one third of the total height of the lamp.

Warm globes always. This is a non-negotiable for me. Even if every other globe in the joint is cool, I still would stick with warm for table lamps.

Below are just a few favourite table lamps I am currently fan girling over from suppliers I know and trust.

Metal bases are also currently featuring big time.  This scalloped table lamp base paired with a velvet drum shade available from Trit House bows down to the 70’s in a good way. The Martha table lamp also comes in a few other colours that will please. Check out the burnt orange version for a real kick of colour.

The Lighting Collective never disappoint when it comes to lighting with a difference. Aptly titled the Picasso inspired table lamp, this delight has buckets of personality.

Anna Spiro, one of Australia’s preeminent designers has just launched this range of Allegory table lamps through Anthropologie. The fan style table lamp shade is back in a big way, so get on this style train before it leaves the station.

Who wouldn’t smile on meeting Mr Light. This desk lamp has just the right amount of whimsy, mixed with just the right amount of task. You can introduce yourself at Lights Lights Lights, a Melbourne based lighting company that is well worth a visit.
